Where everybody else in the world isprepared to spend money, excepting her heartless Governmentand Minister

Rt Hon WINSTON PETERS (Leader,NZ First) to thePrime Minister: Does she have confidence in the Rosetta Stone Minister ofHealth, if so, why?Rt Hon HELEN CLARK (Prime Minister):Yes, because she is a hard-working and conscientiousMinister.Rt Hon Winston Peters: If she is such ahard-working and conscientious Minister, why is she aMinister who says that the efficacy of Alzheimers drugs hasnot been proven, when Canada, UK, Australia, USA, LatinAmerica, and Western Europe all make those drugs publiclyavailable, or is this just another example of inexcusable, inexplicable, heartless cost-cutting?Rt Hon HELEN CLARK:No, none of the above. This country has very carefulmechanisms for assessing what drugs it is appropriate tofund, and I am not aware that those mechanisms andprocedures have changed substantially in recent years, atall.Rt Hon Winston Peters: Why does not the PrimeMinister inform herself of the facts before she rises andmakes a statement like that, when Canada, UK, Australia,USA, Latin America, and Western Europe, nearly all the FirstWorld, recognise that these drugs do work, and make thempublicly available, whilst her Minister is demanding thatPharmac do a trial to find out what everybody else in theworld knows, and where everybody else in the world isprepared to spend money, excepting her heartless Governmentand Minister?Rt Hon HELEN CLARK: I can only repeat thatgetting value for money is very important, and that does notmean paying any price for any drug that a pharmaceuticalcompany wants.Dr Lynda Scott: Is the Prime Minister awarethat these drugs are the only treatment available topatients with Alzheimers, and why will they not befunded?Rt Hon HELEN CLARK: I suggest the member put downa question on notice with specific reference to the questionof Alzheimers drugs. It is this Governments determinationto provide proper treatment for people across the range ofconditions. It is also a fact that we consider healthsufficiently important to have it as a front-benchportfolio.Rt Hon Winston Peters: I raise a point oforder, Mr Speaker. The Prime Minister might think that it isimportant by placing Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin someone on the front bench, but beinginformed about it is not what she is demonstrating today. She should not, having attempted to answer two questionsalready, then pretend that she has adequately answered thisHouse by saying put down a written question . She has beenasked why the only drug proven worldwide is being denied tothe thousands of sufferers in this country, and,Rt HonHELEN CLARK: Speaking to the point of order.Rt HonWinston Peters: No, I have not finished yet. Sit down! I amon my feet.Mr SPEAKER: The member will please be seated. The member does not have to be rude. The member had notfinished and I was going to allow him to continue. Would heplease continue?Rt Hon Winston Peters: I raise a point oforder, Mr Speaker.Mr SPEAKER: No, the member is within apoint of order.Rt Hon Winston Peters: No. My point oforder is that the rudeness commenced with the Prime Ministerthinking that she could rise to her feet when a point oforder is being properly made. If you want to point torudeness, then you should point to her.Mr SPEAKER: I willmake the decision on that. The Prime Minister rose Rosetta Stone American English thinkingthat the member had finished. The member had not finishedand I was going to let him carry on. Would the member pleasecarry on.

They can bedisgusting and vicious

I can further confirm that I havevisited egg-producing businesses and seen Rosetta Stone V3 that it isperfectly possible to have high standards of animal welfarein a caged-bird system. Sue Kedgley: I raise a point oforder, Mr Speaker. My question related to the Government. Iaccept that the member might have visited some farms and hada bit of a look around them, but I asked whether thisGovernment accepts that it is cruel to keep millions ofanimals in cages, yes or no? I wonder whether he could answerthat question. Mr SPEAKER: The member cannot just expecta yes or no answer. The Minister can address that part ofthe question if he wishes. Hon JIM SUTTON: It iscertainly not a given that caged-bird systems are cruel. Ifmembers know of cases where animal welfare is being abusedor not kept up to scratch, it is their duty to report thatto the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry or the SPCA sothat action can be taken. Ian Ewen-Street: Does theAssociate Minister agree with comments made in 2001 to thePork Industry Board by his colleague the Hon Jim Sutton whenhe said: I cannot believe that phasing out sow crates by2006 is an impossible target for you to achieve, , and: If80 percent of producers can do it, why cant theremainder? , if he does agree with Mr Sutton, why has theGovernment accepted a welfare code that will consign manythousands of sows to crates until at least 2015?Hon JIMSUTTON: On behalf of my colleague the Associate Minister, Ican say that as far as I know he does agree with Mr Sutton. He would be well aware that since then both he and I havehad a good deal of expert advice from the National AnimalWelfare Advisory Committee, and we accept that the codesthat have been put in place are the highest standard that ispracticable and enforceable at this time. Dart Valley,RatPlague9. H V ROSS ROBERTSON (Labour,Manukau East) to theMinister of Conservation: What actions are being taken toprotect native wildlife in the Dart Valley threatened by arat plague?Hon CHRIS CARTER (Minister of Conservation):Funding of $120,000 from the Operation Ark initiative Iestablished in 2003 has been made available to theDepartment of Conservation in Otago so that it canimmediately put in place intensive rat control measures.Without that response the endangered Rosetta Stone Spanish Spain yellowhead, which livesin that valley, will be in grave danger if rat numberscontinue to rise and reach plague proportions.H V RossRobertson: What is the purpose of Operation Ark and how isit to be funded?Hon CHRIS CARTER: Operation Ark is arapid response initiative designed to protect keypopulations of critically threatened native wildlife inSouth Island forests, occasional explosive increases in ratand stoat numbers can have a devastating impact on species. It is funded out of the additional $186 million madeavailable for the biodiversity conservation fund in 2000 bythis Government. Immigration,Non-genuine Refugees10.Rt Hon WINSTON PETERS (Leader,NZ First) to the Minister ofImmigration: What steps is he taking, if any, to ensure thatour immigration laws are not exploited, and what is hispolicy on removing non-genuine refugees?Hon PAUL SWAIN(Minister of Immigration): In 2003 the Government boostedthe Immigration Services ability to manage immigration riskby $20 million over 4 years. All non-genuine refugees whoare in New Zealand unlawfully are subject to removal. In2003-04, 667 non-genuine refugees were either removed ordeparted voluntarily from New Zealand. Rt Hon WinstonPeters: Going by answers gleaned from the Ministers officeto two questions lodged on 1 February, can he explain why hehas allowed 700 refugees to arrive here who travelled onfalse passports, who claim to have travelled on falsepassports, or who have destroyed, lost, or otherwisemisplaced their travel documentation, and how are any ofthem different from Ahmed Zaoui, a suspected terrorist whohas already cost the New Zealand taxpayer well over $1.1million?Hon PAUL SWAIN: Firstly, the number of people whoare arriving in New Zealand claiming refugee status hassignificantly declined since the late 1990s. That is a fact.Secondly, they are different from Ahmed Zaoui because he isthe only Rosetta Stone Spanish V3 person in New Zealand who has been subject to asecurity risk certificate.Moana Mackey: What is theGovernment doing to protect New Zealand from illegalimmigration?Hon PAUL SWAIN: The Government has madeconsiderable progress in improving New Zealands bordersecurity, including introducing Advance PassengerProcessing, whereby checks are made before people board aplane.

John Deuss has faced toughscrapes before

Around thistime, David Corn wrote the book, Blond Ghost, which was ahatchet job, singling out Shackley Rosetta Stone V3 for all manor of crimesand misdemeanors. [emphasis added]I asked Ted why hedidn't respond to what he regarded as the blatant untruthsCorn wrote about him. He replied that even if he could, there would be little point in doing so. The CIA is theLeft's favorite whipping boy and he, Shackley, operated inits darkest corridors. He felt the bias in the book would beapparent to any level-headed person who bothered to read it.The problem is that since Shackley's death, there hasbeen no one to defend him from the book's accusations. Apity. Shackley had mixed feelings about the Agency but wasintensely loyal to his former comrades. I remembermeeting Shackley in Washington where he took former CIAchief William Colby to lunch. Colby, now long since deceasedas well, recounted a number of experiences from the headydays of the Vietnam War. News reports ofinvestigations into Deuss' empire by UK and Dutch taxauthorities are both colorful and bizarre. The allegationssuggest someone who has lost all sense of proportion, not tomention misjudging the risks involved. This isn't the JohnDeuss I once knew. He was too sensible or clever to becaught up in something like this. (He once remarked inan offhand way how foolish he thought Marc Rich was inflaunting the law.) John Deuss has faced toughscrapes before. Don't count him out yet. J.P.DonlonChief Executive magazinewww.chiefexecutive.net LEDA SANFORDINTERVIEW: LedaSanford Suzan Mazur: Would youdescribe your first meeting with John Deuss? LedaSanford: I met John Deuss in January 1978 at a timewhen he urgently needed a person to pick up the pieces ofhis Chief Executive magazine and produce the fourthissue. It was an unforgettable encounter because of thedramatic setting of his office on the19th floor of theOlympic Towers and his own striking appearance. Deussseemed a bit sinister. His face appeared slanted and he hada sort of "Hitler hairdo". But when he smiled and put outhis hand to welcome me I relaxed. It was 6pm. The Rosetta Stone Hindi NewYork sky was dark behind the spires of St. Patrick'sCathedral, silhouetted in the floor-to-ceiling windows ofhis office.Deuss was impressed that I'd worked forRaymond K. Mason, as president and publisher of AmericanHome magazine. Mason was the owner of CharterPublishing, the third largest publishing company in the USat the time. Mason was also chairman and founder of Charter Oil.Prior to my becoming publisher of American Home, I'd been editor-in-chief of Men'sWear, a magazine put out by Fairchild [also publisher of Women's Wear Daily -- the bible of the fashionindustry]. I distinctly remember how uncomfortable itwas for Deuss to admit that he was in a predicament. [emphasis added] Suzan Mazur: What was thepredicament? Leda Sanford: He was trusting. And he had allowed a man named Henry O. Dormann, apparently"inventor" of the idea of Chief Executive, tooperate without proper oversight. He'd met Dormann in Africain a hotel lobby and it was there that Dormann sold him onthe idea for the magazine. Deuss put a lot of money intothe magazine. Suzan Mazur: How much? LedaSanford: Nobody was keeping track. But then Deusshad to abruptly fire Dormann. Dormann had also been askingfor extravagance -- a marble bathroom, etc.But whenDormann left, he took the company files and advertisinginsertion orders with him. And he set up his own company afew blocks away, announcing that Chief Executivemagazine had changed its name to Leaders. Thatadvertising materials should be sent to the new address of Leaders. Suzan Mazur: Why did youdecide to take the Chief Executive AssociatePublisher/Editor position?Leda Sanford: I likechallenge. I took the job because it was different. And itwould cause me to stretch.Deuss did not want to close themagazine over the Dormann incident. The magazine was auseful tool for gaining access to CEOs and politicians, which could benefit Joc Oil. He needed someone who couldjump in quickly, oversee production and editorial, andconvince the ad agencies who had committed to the fourthissue of Chief Executive scheduled for April 1978, thattheir commitment was indeed to his magazine. Deuss wascordial and emphatic during that first meeting. He askedwhat I wanted as salary, and he asked me to prepare a budget& recommendations for a small staff. And the fourth issueof Chief Executive, did indeed, come out on time --with a profile of Ian Smith, the new prime minister ofRhodesia on the cover. It was Rosetta Stone Korean designed by Paul Hardy, theart director I worked with throughout mycareer. Ian Smith, then the newprime minister of Rhodesia on the cover of ChiefExecutive magazine Suzan Mazur: Was Deuss a hands-on editor-in-chief? LedaSanford: Deuss gave me complete autonomy. His onlyinvolvement was conducting the major interviews thatappeared in the magazine.

CYBER NOTESSMALLER TOWNS GETTING MUNICIPAL WI-FI BEFORE BIGCITIES WIRED

To Rosetta Stone software read the headlines, you'd think the dream of free, citywide wireless was deadcoast to coast. One after another, big municipal Wi-Fiprojects - San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta - have hit theskids. But check out the rest of the map: Dozens oflower-profile locales are launching government-sponsorednetworks. Most are smaller cities and counties, wherebureaucracies are less onerous and costs are lower.(Philadelphia, the sixth-largest US city, is the biggesturban area to get a network running, with about 100 squaremiles of coverage.)Santa Monica, California: The0.21-square-mile network in this seaside LA town servesmainly downtown locations and the area's parks, includingthe oft-filmed and picturesque Palisades Park, high on abluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.St. Cloud, Florida:Touted as having one of the best free municipal wirelesssystems in the country, this community of 54,000 claims thatnearly 80 percent of its citizens use the service.Chaska,Minnesota: In 2004, this Twin Cities suburb rolled out oneof the earliest municipal Wi-Fi networks in the US. The citycharges $17 per month for downstream speeds of 250 Kbps to1.2 Mbps. Alas, the network still doesn't cover every squareinch of town.Rio Rancho, New Mexico: This city north ofAlbuquerque pulled the plug on its Wi-Fi network late lastyear after a dispute with its wireless ISP,Azulstar.HEALTH & SCIENCE STUDY OF STUDIES FIND SOME VITAMINSUPPLEMENTS MAY SHORTEN LIFESCHOOLS & THEYOUNG YOUTH GETTING A SAY AT FAMILYCOURT CITY LIMITS A movement to includemore young people in their own Family Court hearings hasslowly but surely been gaining momentum over the pastseveral years. The question now, advocates and thoseinvolved in the Family Court system say, is not whether itis a good idea to encourage children to participate in theirhearings - particularly when the hearings focus on thechild's long-term, permanent living situation - but how tomake it happen more often. The Rosetta Stone Spain Spanish Family Court system in NewYork City, with one court building for each borough, addresses cases of abuse and neglect, adoption, custody andvisitation, juvenile delinquency and other matters involvingchildren and families. . .The movement to encourage morechildren and youth participation in Family Court began topick up steam several years ago. While children would attendhearings from time to time, advocates say it was achallenging feat to pull off and there was no clear mandateto include children in hearings. . .In June of last year, advocates began hearing from children themselves through thecitywide Youth Justice Board, a panel of foster children andformer foster children under the aegis of the public-privateCenter for Court Innovation. . . One of the findings of theYJB report was that youth feel like their voice is missingfrom their cases. "Youth want their needs and opinions to beheard, but they don't always understand how to make thathappen. ... The perception from the youth's point of view isthat many adults are talking about them, but not many aretalking to them." According to the report, some young peoplehave been involved in court proceedings and had a positiveexperience. One such person was quoted as saying, "They [thepeople in the courtroom] see your face, they have moreunderstanding. They felt the emotion. I think it goesquicker when they see your face." Another youth said, "Ispoke to the judge. The framework for development is not mandatory

It aims tosupport sector developments. Five Strategic Focus Areashave been identified for action by government and asopportunities for action by the early childhood educationsector.(For information on Rosetta Stone the Five Strategic Focus areasand the initiatives being funded by Government, please referto the Foundations for Discovery Factsheet)Q. Whydevelop an ICT Framework for the early childhood educationsector?A. With investment in ICT by early childhoodeducation services likely to increase significantly over thenext few years, the sector sought advice on what toinvestment in and on the use of ICT.The ICT Frameworksets out to assist the early childhood sector to harness thepotential of ICT in a considered and planned way to supporteffective learning and teaching, and to support services tomake informed decisions about investment in and use of ICTin early childhood education, be it for teaching, learning, administrative or information management purposes.TheFramework will provide guidance on what constitutesappropriate and beneficial uses of ICT with young children, and will guard against inappropriate and non-beneficial ICTuse in the early childhood education sector. The ICTFramework supports the achievement of the sectors ten-yearstrategic plan, NgxE2, Huarahi Arataki: Pathways to the Future,in particular improvements in quality early childhoodeducation and the promotion of collaborativerelationships.Q. What Rosetta Stone Chinese are the benefits of ICT use inearly childhood education settings?A. Children have theopportunity to experience enhanced learning opportunitiesthrough the meaningful use of ICT, which will enable them tostrengthen relationships (with adults and other children),and broaden their horizons through exploration of the widerworld. The effective use of ICT can support learning forchildren from diverse cultural backgrounds. For educatorsICT increases and improves access to professionaldevelopment and in-service training opportunities, access totools and resources to assist teaching practice, and thedevelopment of stronger relationships within the sector. Research from the Centres of Innovation show there arepositive outcomes for children when educators have in-depthknowledge on the use of ICT. For early childhoodeducation service management and administrators, ICT use canassist the efficient management and administration of theservice, including streamlining administrative workloads. For parents and whxE2,nau ICT can help build stronger andmore collaborative relationships with services and schoolsthrough the sharing of information and more appropriate useof ICT. The effective use of ICT can enhance and promote TeReo MxE2,ori and support Rosetta Stone French kaupapa MxE2,ori in whxE2,nau-basedlearning.Q. What is the timeframe for delivery of theICT Framework?A. The ICT Framework will be implemented, monitored and evaluated over the next four years, at whichtime it will be reviewed to accommodate the rapid nature ofICTchange.

A formal statement of values

Moving on from the yesterday's Vogans to their traveling companions the Dentrassi, for those who are Rosetta Stone Language not aware these creatures are simply the best cooks in the Galaxy and pick up stray hitchhikers to annoy their Vogon hosts. I've brought them into the equation as a key metaphor for me is the difference between a chef and a recipe book user. A recipe book user follows a formula (industrial consultancy) while a chef understands the principles of taste and can thus create a wonderful meal from whatever you happen to have in your kitchen when s/he arrives. In working with organisational values we need a few chefs not a deployed team of recipe book users garnered off the bench of a large consultancy firm.Yesterday I established a difference between rule and ideation based cultures, the former explicit, the latter tacit. I argued that making values explicit was flawed on practical grounds, but I could equally have argued that it is theoretically flawed. True values are evidenced in our actions, it is not enough to state that something is the case, or even to believe it, it must be enacted: Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only (James 2:24) A formal statement of values may appear Language Learning Software to make a clear statement, but in reality it introduces the wrong sort of ambiguity, and the more platitudinous the statement the worst the problem. If for example you are foolish enough to say We put our customers first, then how will you deal with a member of staff whose pro-customer actions produce a massive loss? If Our staff are our greatest asset then how to you handle the inevitable layoffs when a recession hits? Hermeneutics are your enemy, not your friend and the inevitable consequence of taking an explicit approach. So how do we manage an ideation based culture? Well the first and most critical lesson is that we have to manage in the here and now, not some idealistic future state. That means we have to start with mapping the current culture, discovering the dominant beliefs, the proto-myths and the evolutionary possibilities: which directions are possible, not which goal would we like to achieve. Now there are various ways to do this, and its one of the areas where Cognitive Edge has a solid body of methods and also one where SenseMaker? has a significant role to play. Four of the options include: Mapping emergent archetypal characters as cultural signifiers. I wrote this approach up in some detail here and the method is taught on Cognitive Edge accreditation courses. Basically a series of workshops allow the indirect creation of emergent values and archetypal characters (see the illustration for one example) who collectively provide a cultural representation. This method allows discussions to take place about what the archetypes represent, and how they might be changed, culminating Japanese Learning Software in safe-fail interventions in an attempt to trigger change. Ideally type of intervention would seek to amplify a positive but weak archetype rather than to tackle a negative one directly. Archetypes are powerful in many ways.

Not everything that counts can be counted

The rat is more effective as it can process 2000, not 20 samples a day. This is a great image Rosetta Stone and example of exploring what we don't know. Know recommending Theory U and Presence which triggers an allergic reaction in me against idealistic and sometimes pious (in the negative sense of the word) approaches. Another good example though, the traditional healer in the village given a mobile phone to allow direct contact to hospital experts rather than building hospitals 100s of miles away. Reduction of material mortality by 50% in three years by linking knowledge bases in novel ways at low cost. Real stuff this, don't replicate a western model in Africa but build in evolutionary ways on the potential of the present (my words there but I think this is what he means).Another Einstein quote now: Not everything that counts can be counted, not everything that can be counted counts Einstein again. Again I agree with this and I can pick up in my closing keynote with some SenseMaker? examples as this is a IT audience in the main. Drawing to a conclusion now with some good lists. The role of the leader is to relentlessly spread the word on the importance of knowledge sharing and learning, give recognition to supporting behaviour and above all walk the talk, teach by example. this latter point is key, actions of leaders say more (and stories spread faster) than motiviations speeches, emails or other forms of communication, in Rosetta Stone Software action all meaning is encompassed (not sure about that, its mine not Nick's but it sounds good). He argues here that incentives need to be aligned which I am less sure about. I get a hint that he is also uncomfortable as he says the langauge of appraisal was misinterpreted and gamed, something that conforms with my own experience. Some key lessons learnt now. That allows recall via semantic analysis tag clouds etc. There are issues of scalability, tagging requires consistent use of language. I really admire people like Patrick Lamb and Shawn who can do this, but I can't even use the fiveteen categories on this blog and I've never got into tags. Use of language changes over time and its difficult to find things or see wider patterns. High volume ambiguous signification This is the area which has been a large part of my and Cognitive Edge's focus since we left IBM. Its the basis of SenseMaker?. The principle here is to move to multiple forms of capture (we are now using pens and iPods as well as web sites and this will extend over the next year or so to allow increasing levels of pervasive capture both as stories, but also as a part of operational processes, linking narrative to more formal systems. Key to this is self-signification in ambiguous structures. You could almost make a cylinder of the framework above in respect of ambiguity. If you're not familiar with the approach then this University of Surrey video goes through the whole thing (and its patent pending by the way). The point is that ambiguity is key to effective search of high volume material. This is a summary post so I'm going to leave it there for the moment. The real point of this post was (i) to create a wider context and (ii) to argue Rosetta Stone Spanish (Latin) a key Cognitive Edge principle, different things work in different contexts. Saying my approach is right, their approach is wrong may be right in some contexts but its not true in all. Narrative or Story is a fundamental aspect of what it means to be human, its a lot bigger than its practitioners.

Cognitive Edge

Many years ago I read Max Boist's Knowledge Assets and Rosetta Stone came across his I-Space model which inspired an early version of the Cynefin framework. I have always acknowledged the debt, but at no stage laid any claim to Boisot's original model. This is basic academic integrity; acknowledge your sources but take responsibility for what follows. Integrity also requires its practitioners to not claim status by association; a form of plagiarism that should probably evoke sympathy as much as condemnation. Since the Cynefin framework achieved some fame I have seen various responses which can be roughly grouped as follows: (i) use and development of the model, with proper acknowledgement of source, (ii) various uses of the model to domains with which I have varying levels of knowledge and (iii) what I will call the vindication response. The first two of these are legitimate and a stimulus to thinking, equivalent to my work with Boisot. The vindication approach is one where someone seizes on the model as vindicating something they have believed for a long time, but have not been able to secure the attention they feel they deserve. All too often they have not even read the material, just seized on some of the language and and key phrases with which they resonate, and then use the model to vindicate their own ideas; bootstrapping credibility. This is the second form of plagiarism that I reference above and I will confess I generally get irritated before I realise that sympathy or indifference is probably a better response. That said I always try my best to engage with the individual concerned.Observers of the twitterverse will by now have realised that I am referencing recent disagreements with Tom Graves, self described as an Enterprise architect, business anarchist and confusionist. I hadn't paid much attention to the most esoteric of these descriptors but over the last month ago I have gained more appreciation! Tom Rosetta Stone Language is also into water and pendulum dowsing, "earth-mysteries" and personal development based on the nordic concept of Wyrd; an interesting combination of interests which has some relevance to what follows.Origins of Cynefin in Systems ArchitectureThe original reason I engaged with Tom is that he appeared to understand that a systems architecture is not just about IT systems. This contrasts with my first encounter with the subject, back in IBM days where the founding father was generally considered to be J A Zachman and his IBM Systems Journal paper A framework for information systems architecture is still a classic. There are two interesting links here. The first fully refereed article on Cynefin was also in the IBM Systems Journal, and the referees made several references back to Zachman. Secondly there was an extended discourse between the Cynefin group in IBM and various systems architectural initiatives. IBM was then (in a CEO sponsored initiative) engaged in a research programme to take the ideas of a CEO (possibly with the involvement of his/her board but I got the sense that was optional) and translate them into IT systems with minimal human intervention. That discourse which went on over a couple of years had a profound impact on the emerging Cynefin framework. The "Probe-Sense-Respond" nomenclature along with the catastropic fold between simple and chaos all come from that period. Since that time the Rosetta Stone American English application of the Cynefin framework to business design has continued, but there is also a significant technical interface in our development of both tools and methods.

What Does Your Body Language Tell?

It is your choice whether to listen or not listen to someone talking. You listen Rosetta Stone Language when needed and wanted to, but do other people see you as a good listener? Listening skills are essential for good relationships and are also a critical skill in many professions, especially the helping professions. Whether you're maintaining a happy marriage relationship, counseling someone with problems, or coaching members of your team for business success, good listening skills lead others to feel more comfortable. They will have more confidence in you and hold you in higher esteem. You may not realize how important your body language is, when others view you. It is even more important that your words. So, what says 'good listener' and inspires in others who speak to you the confidence that you really are listening? Your body language, of course! Even if you really are listening to every word, you won't be seen as a good listener unless you have the right body language.A poor listener has many of these traits -leans away or even turns away slightly, arms folded, maybe a bit of impatient toe tapping, and frequently looking elsewhere. Or, if someone starts to read then you know for sure they're not listening! And of course if your body language suggests Language Learning Software you don't want to listen, the other person will feel less comfortable talking with you and will be less likely to

Europe and the U.S.Is this something we should fear

We can quote Putin on the tragic loss of the U.S.S.R., and if I can dig up my list of Putinisms on Rosetta Stone Language my puter's hard drive, you'll get a taste of his Soviet nostalgia and gutter humor. But Putin is, above all, a realist. He never promises more than he can deliver, as his former friends in the U.S. State Department used to say. And although he has a knack of being out of town when bad stuff goes down, he rarely hides his intentions.Putin rose to power on the back of the second Chechen war, arguably the most brutal onslaught in Europe since World War II (the arguable part is the question of geography, not bloodshed). Now, hear me well, Michael, I'm no Putin apologist, as my books and writings on his regime make plain. But what Putin wants, ultimately, in that icy heart of his is for Russia to join what he and his patriots longingly call "the civilized world" -- shorthand for the non-Slavic nations that boast strong cultural traditions, enduring institutions and economies that don't collapse overnight. In other words, Europe and the U.S.Is this something we should fear? Especially at a time when NATO no longer has the guts to walk the talk of its own charter?Andrew Meier is a former Moscow correspondent for Time magazine and the author of the new book, "The Lost Spy: An American in Stalin's Secret Service."Deal cautiously with RussiaCounterpoint: Michael C. MoynihanAndrew, you provide a succinct -- and much needed -- recapitulation of Russia's Yeltsin-era economic crises. In attempting to contextualize the political situation in Russia, countless pundits and Language Learning Software Kremlin watchers have employed the word "humiliation" to portray a country desperate to reassert its power after the dissolution of the Soviet empire and the violent gangsterism and crony capitalism of the 1990s. Russia has been humiliated, and now it is having its revenge. And although it is true that opinion polls in the region show alarming levels of nostalgia for the Soviet Union, it seems rather more likely that seven years of economic growth (buoyed by high oil prices) and a rising middle class do more to explain the popularity of Putin's brand of authoritarian democracy and aggressive foreign policy. This has doubtless put Russia in a better position to reassert control in its own backyard (which, during the Cold War, included the Middle East and Africa), as we have already seen during the second Chechen war, the Ukrainian election of 2004 and now the invasion of Georgia. And as countless mentators have noted, there is a distinct feeling of deja vu among Kremlinologists, though the current situation in Georgia is, contra Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in no way analogous to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 or Afghanistan in 1979.It is perhaps an obvious point, but one that bears repeating: Russian hegemony in 1979 included direct control over Eastern Europe, the Caucuses, the Baltics and indirect control over other "fraternal" socialist movements, allies and guerrillas in Nicaragua, Cuba, South Yemen, Syria and Angola. So if by Russian "hegemony" we are using the recent Soviet past as a point of parison, I would argue that we are in a less urgent situation.Whether all of this would have happened had Georgia already been a NATO member is an interesting French Learning Software counterfactual and raises a question about one of your key points, Andrew. You say that Putin is a realist (agreed) and that he desires inclusion in the West.

Hear 'Reform,' Think 'Destroy'

In a 1946 essay titled "Politics and the English Language," George Orwell observed that all political language Rosetta Stone is designed "to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind."As President Bush begins his second term, he has already demonstrated the truth of Orwell's dictum by persuading much of the windy news media to attach the word "reform" to his plan for fundamental change in the way Social Security is financed. Each time television or radio newscasters use the phrase "Social Security reform," as they do every day, they send a message to the American public that Social Security is a broken system in need of fixing. The general definition of reform is always positive, conveying the notion of changes designed to improve an institution. In its specific political sense, reform is offered as a moderate alternative to radicalism and revolution. Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, for instance, has been judged by history as a set of reforms that saved capitalism from its own worst excesses. Neither mon nor political usage justifies the application of the reform brand to such a controversial proposal as the Republican plan to privatize Social Security.A minority of newspapers (the Los Angeles Times among them) appear to have made a conscientious effort to keep the reform label out of their headlines and use more neutral terms like "change" and "revision." But most of the media have capitulated to the administration's understandable desire to soothe the public with the R-word, thereby displaying as profound a bias as if the Bush plan were routinely described as "Social Security Rosetta Stone Software destruction.""Reform" is a particularly loaded term because it has such a long history of appropriation and exploitation by both religious and political groups. Not for nothing do Protestants use the proper noun Reformation to describe their 16th century break with the Roman Catholic Church. But when I attended parochial schools in the 1950s, priests and nuns talked only about schism and heresy. To cite a more recent example, Bill Clinton was as successful as Bush has been in his effort to dress a potential wolf -- welfare reform -- in sheep's clothing. But Clinton was more candid than Bush in that he promised to "end welfare as we know it." He could make that statement because welfare -- unlike Social Security -- elicits negative responses from many middle-class Americans. A Bush promise to "end Social Security as we know it" would scare so many voters that it might have the unintended consequence of ending the Bush administration as we know it.The ubiquitousness of the phrase "Social Security reform" cannot be attributed solely to conscious political strategy. The lazy, tone-deaf relationship to the English language that pervades the electronic media is far more influential -- and far more destructive in the long run to rational political discourse -- than any political machination. The broadcasters who parrot lines about Social Security reform are the same people who are paid millions of dollars each year to read senseless sentences like, "I could care less" -- oblivious to the fact that what they really mean is, "I couldn't care less."A culture that pays little heed to the precise meaning of words is easy prey for those who distort Rosetta Stone Spanish (Spain) words to suit their ideological purposes. As Orwell noted, slovenly language is not merely the product of foolish thoughts; it "makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts."Susan Jacoby is the author of "Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism" (Metropolitan Books, 2004) and director of the Center for Inquiry-Metro New York.

Abolitionist Movement Articles, Video, Pictures and Facts

From the 1830s until 1870, the abolitionist movement attempted to achieve immediate Rosetta Stone outlet emancipation of all slaves and the ending of racial segregation and discrimination. Their propounding of these goals distinguished abolitionists from the broad-based political opposition to slavery's westward expansion that took form in the North after 1840 and raised issues leading to the Civil War. Yet these two expressions of hostility to slavery--abolitionism and Free-Soilism--were often closely related not only in their beliefs and their interaction but also in the minds of southern slaveholders who finally came to regard the North as united against them in favor of black emancipation.Although abolitionist feelings had been strong during the American Revolution and in the Upper South during the 1820s, the Rosetta Stone Japanese abolitionist movement did not coalesce into a militant crusade until the 1830s. In the previous decade, as much of the North underwent the social disruption associated with the spread of manufacturing and commerce, powerful evangelical religious movements arose to impart spiritual direction to society. By stressing the moral imperative to end sinful practices and each person's responsibility to uphold God's will in society, preachers like Lyman Beecher, Nathaniel Taylor, and Charles G. Finney in what came to be called the Second Great Awakening led massive religious revivals in the 1820s that gave a major impetus to the later emergence of abolitionism as well as to such other reforming crusades as temperance, pacifism, and women's rights. By the early 1830s, Theodore D. Weld, William Lloyd Garrison, Arthur and Lewis Tappan, and Elizur Wright, Jr., all spiritually nourished by revivalism, had taken up the cause of "immediate Rosetta Stone Portuguese emancipation."In early 1831, Garrison, in Boston, began publishing his famous newspaper, the Liberator, supported largely by free African-Americans, who always played a major role in the movement.

The Pros Cons of Learning a Foreign Language at a Younger/Older Age

There seems to be no optimum age for learning a language, according to linguistics experts. There are Rosetta Stone software some advantages to starting young as children tend to mimic accents accurately so tend to have better pronunciation. However, adult learners can use their knowledge about their native language along with study skills techniques to speed up foreign language learning. Children's Pronunciation Rosetta Stone Italian The earlier you learn a foreign language, the better your accent and intonation will be, according to linguistics experts. In fact, the critical time for acquiring a good accent seems to be before puberty. After that, it becomes much more d Ifficult to gain near-native pronunciation. Some experts point to the "critical period hypothesis," that spans from birth to around puberty, as a time when foreign language acquisition is faster and easier.Openness to LanguageChildren are usually more open to experiment and less likely to feel embarrassed about making mistakes in front of other students. Adults often clam up when asked to speak in a classroom environment and "over-think" the sentence or word. Making errors is a crucial part of the language Rosetta Stone Japanese process. Children also tend to be curious and excited about the new language and seek opportunities to practice new words and phrases.Adult AdvantagesAdults have several advantages over children when it comes to learning a foreign language. The main one is that adults have already learned at least one language. Adults can apply various study techniques, such as mnemonic memory strategies, to speed up their language learning. Adults tend to maintain both native and foreign [ Rosetta Stone Software ] languages at a high level while children who learn a second language can lose proficiency in the first language.

Mobile VoIP Hardware or Software Based - Packet8 MobileTalk vs. Yeigo

As the VoIP industry is pretty settled with fixed phones, providing seamless and Rosetta Stone software cheap mobile VoIP service has become the new challenge. The easiest came first, i.e. softphone applications that can be installed on mobile phones and that use data networks to place and receive calls. Examples of the most prominent ones are Yeigo, Fring, PeerMe and Truphone. Then came hardware-based service providers with mobile service; something closer to what mobile users are used to. In this piece of content, I make a comparison between Packet8's Mobile Talk and Yeigo, which are respectively hardware-based and software-based services. I chose Packet8's Mobile Talk because at the time I am writing this, there is nothing else to choose from, since I found none of the prominent VoIP service providers offering something of the like; and I chose Yeigo because at the time I am writing this, I find Yeigo the best application and service for VoIP on mobile phones. How They Rosetta Stone Greek WorkThe things in common between the two services are: they both operate on mobile phones (obviously!); they both use VoIP; and they both have a small application to install. The last one will make you ask why I still call MobileTalk hardware-based. This is because the calls are routed to the same system that manages their hardware-based service. With MobileTalk, once you dial an international prefix (starting with 011, Boxed Art There or 1), your call is redirected to the Packet8 phone service, whose network is used to channel your call to its destination. Yeigo, on the other hand, uses a data network to route your calls, in the form of packets. So for this, you will require a data connection through either Wi-Fi, GPRS/EDGE or 3G/HSDPA.CostsMobileTalk's international rates are very interesting. On average, they are two to three times cheaper than Yeigo (and other services of the like) to most destinations. So, a MobileTalk subscriber who makes many international calls to landline and mobile phones is likely to save a real lot (90Boxed Art There as claimed by Packet8). However, there is no free service with MobileTalk like with Yeigo. If you have Yeigo on your mobile phone and your correspondent has the same too, you two can talk for free. You need to buy credit with Yeigo only when calling landline phones or mobile phones not running Yeigo. In a way, the higher rates are compensated by this free range. You should however not forget to add the cost of the data network required by Yeigo to your calculations. This can be quite important in certain contexts. MobileTalk charges a one-time activation fee of $10 for subscribers ($5 for subscribers who Rosetta Stone Hindi V3 already are its customers). Yeigo has no activation fee. Here are links to MobileTalk rates and Yeigo rates. RequirementsBesides the cell phone and the small application to be installed on it, you require only the subscription before starting to make international calls with MobileTalk. Yeigo requires a data network (Wi-Fi, GPRS/EDGE or 3G/HSDPA), which is often costly.MobileTalk works through your mobile carrier, so subscribing to the service requires you to give your mobile number and quite some other information, before actually being able to download and install the software. Yeigo only requires you to install the application and register, and buy credits when and if needed. Compatibility of the phone you use is an issue to consider as well. I skimmed through the list of compatible phones and found that most I know are listed, but this check is important before subscribing, or you might have to buy a new phone. Here are the links for the cell phones compatible with MobileTalk and Yeigo (look on the right-hand side frame for Compatibility Check). Countries and Areas They CoverMobileTalk has two important limitations here: it is available only in the US, and offers cheap rates only for international rates. For mobile calls within the US, the price goes up to $1.5, instead of the $0.02 or so for international calls. In a word, MobileTalk is a service for US citizens to make international calls. Yeigo offers the same service worldwide, to anyone in any country [ Rosetta Stone Software ] that has the necessary requirements. Also, calls within a country can be cheaper, depending on the cost of the data network. Bottom Line I see the typical MobileTalk user as being a person running a business (whether big or small), who has to make many international calls, and to people that will not bother about what phones they use or what they install on them. MobileTalk is ideal for heavy international communication to many callees of different nature. The typical Yeigo user would be an individual with a network of frequent correspondents. Friends, relatives, colleagues, peers etc. If they all install Yeigo, they can talk for free.
